Pride & Disobedience

“And all the people perceived the thunder and the lightening flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.  Then they said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.’

“And Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.’  So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.” Exodus 20:18-21

“Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron, and said to him, ‘Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’  And Aaron said to them, ‘Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.’

“Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.  And he took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and make it into a molten calf; and they said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.’” Exodus 32:1-4

[Saul] “now had a history of failure as well as the success of his early days, and rather than face up to the fact that he was the cause of the failure through his pride and disobedience, he doubted the sufficiency of God.  Faced with Goliath, he really knew what he should do, but unlike David, he had a history of only selective obedience that had deprived himself of learning how consistently God was wholly trustworthy.”*

Aaron, being Moses brother had more reason to trust in the Lord, as he had seen God work around and through Moses so often.  Yet, who knows what was in Aaron’s heart as he “took the reins” of these lost Israelites, lacking a leader in the middle of the desert.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
