YouTube – House of Caiphas: Peter’s Denial of Christ

Jerusalem, Israel, Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu!

“O Lord, the God of my salvation, I have cried out by day and in the night before You.  Let my prayer come before You; incline Your ear to my cry!

“For my soul has had enough tro9ubles, and my life has drawn near to Sheol.  I am reckoned among those who go down to the pit; I have become like a man without strength.

“Forsaken among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, and they are cut off from Your hand.  You have put me in the lowest pit, in dark places in the depths.

“Your wrath has rested upon me, and You have afflicted me with all Your waves.  You have removed my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an object of loathing to them; I am shut up and cannot go out.”  Psalm 88:1-8

There were forty of us on our first trip to Israel.  Here we were at a magnificent cathedral that had been built over a ruin thought to have been Caiphas’ palace.

We were shepherded deep into the building, into a lavish room, perhaps 50 feet square.  It had beautiful polished, stone floors and subdued lighting.  Without being told to, we were all quiet.

Doug, our pastor, directed us to move around an opening in the centre of the room.  It was encircled by a plexiglass fence with a brass railing around the top.

There was a gate in one part of the fence that was opened for us.  It led to an ancient, stone, stairway that hugged the stone walls and wound around the inside with stairs cut into the stone itself.

In single file, we carefully and slowly moved down the stairs.  There was barely a sound except our feet shuffling on the stone.  It was maybe 25-30 feet deep.  As we descended it grew cooler.

Reaching the bottom Doug directed us to fan out and as we looked up from where we came, it seemed so very far away and the opening very small.

He explained this was thought to be the cistern under Caiphas’ palace where, after Jesus was questioned, mocked, beaten and betrayed by Peter -- a rope would have been tied around His chest under His arms.

The rough fibre of the rope would have bitten tightly into His flailed and bruised skin as He was slowly lowered near to the bottom of the pit -- then dropped to the bottom for maximum damage.

The guards would leave the rope tied around Him until the next morning, so they could easily pull Him up.

I’m unsure what others were feeling, but my heart was pounding.  Most of us found ourselves on our knees as we considered that lost, last night of our Saviour.

And then, they turned out the lights.

It was so dark!  The stone floor was so rough and uneven, so very cold and damp!

As I knelt there in the total dark silence, with the cold, moist, rough stone pressing into my knees -- it was as if something in me --in all of us--pulled out quiet weeping -- as we could not imagine this cruelty happening to anyone, let alone the gentle Jesus.

And then Doug quietly read Psalm 88.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
