Perspective and What Does It Matter?

"The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. " Matthew 1:1

"In as much as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us; just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word have handed them down to us, it seems fitting for me as well having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you might know the exact truth about the things you have been taught." Luke 1: 1-4

The Beatitudes, which will begin this new series appear in Matthew and Luke.  Each writer had a special audience he wrote to and therefore the emphasis and focus are a bit different.

Luke, a man of science and medicine, wrote to the Greek mind, the intellectual.  He emphasises Christ as the Perfect Man.  So when we look at the Beatitudes there, we will keep that in mind.

Most are likely more familiar with the "Sermon on the Mount" Beatitudes that appear in Matthew.  I suspect one key reason for this is Matthew is the first book of the New Testament.  People get enthusiastic about reading the entire New Testament and sort of drift off from their resolve -- but manage to get through at least Matthew 5, 6 or even 7.

Matthew's emphasis is to persuade the Jews.  There are many Old Testament verses quoted in it.  His focus is on Christ as the Jewish Messiah, fulfilling prophecy that the Jews were steeped in.  He pictures Jesus as the Lion of God, of the lineage of king David --the fulfilment and hope and restoration of the kingdom.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

NEED PRAYER UPDATES PLEASE!

  • Please continue to pray for the special person you identified two weeks ago in your assignment, until they fall into His arms.  Then you can pick another to pray for!

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

  • ·        UPDATE - Adrian - Slowly recovering from the flu.  Still in bed and not eating as his little freezer stopped working.  He is so tired, but sounding a bit better.  The doctor insists on weekly rather than monthly treatments starting next week.  It takes so much out of him.  Please pray the Lord will hold him and cuddle him gently through this.  I made contact with the social worker in the regional hospital he last was in.  She promised to contact him today and help him sort some things out.  Pray for Adrian's companion dog, Toby, to remain healthy.  He is very important to Adrian's mental well-being and a clear gift from the Lord during this time of pain and loneliness.
  • ·        UPDATE - JR - one of my brother's lifetime friends was found to have rapidly advancing small cell carcinoma in his brain.  He is now in hospital having a series of radiation treatments.  Pray for his wife, family, friends and the health carers as they deal with this serious situation.  Pray his heart opens to the love and grace of Jesus.
  • ·        UPDATE - My brother, Tim - Pray for strength, wisdom, courage, health and patience as he ministers to his sweet friend JR (and Dale) during this difficult time.  Tim has shared his testimony with JR, but due to the extreme hot weather, Tim has been unable to visit JR this week.
