A Bird Lesson

"Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made; and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth.

"Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land: but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him, into the ark; for the water was on the surface of all the earth.  Then he put out his hand and took her , and brought her into the ark to himself.

"So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark.  And the dove came to him toward evening; and behold in her beak was a freshly picked olive leaf.  So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth.  Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove; but she did not return to him again."  Genesis 8:6-7

Here is Noah and family in the ark.  We know it is stuffy and smelly.  They've been crammed in there 150 days so far with a menagerie of more animals that exist today.

Since Noah knew animal behaviours, it is interesting he chose these two birds to send out to "test the waters."  The raven is a carnivore and would happily have hopped from dead carcass to dead carcass with no thought for Noah's plight.

The dove is a "clean" bird who will not take refuge on the dead.  She returned to Noah.  Noah waited another seven days and, it seems, sent the same dove out again.  (perhaps she was a pet)

Her loyalty to Noah was clear when she returned with an olive leaf in her beak.  She could have stayed in the olive tree, but she was faithful to her provider and protector.  When Noah set her free she knew she was to begin again.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
