WeakEnd Assignment – Foggy Thorns

YouTube: How to Understand a Thorn, Part 1

A Sermon by Tony Evans

By – Maximo M. Parker (the message ends at 13 min 51 sec)

“Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me – to keep me from exalting myself!

“Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me.  And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness,’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weakness, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

“Therefore, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” II Corinthians 12:7-12

Assignment

The mystery of what Paul’s thorn is will only be satisfied once we meet Paul in heaven.  Thorns, however, are important because we all have at least one.  We may ignore it, deny it, blame others for it, or just give up under its pressure.

Thorns are all different, and with every thorn, God provides grace to endure.  (If you completed the earlier WeakEnd Assignment on thorns, there is a reason for the emphasis on thorns.)

1.    Set aside an hour and find a place where you will not be interrupted and where you can watch and listen to the above video.

2.    Bring your Bible, notebook, something to write with and a refreshment.

3.    Quieten your heart and pray for the Lord to give you new insight of the value of your thorn(s) and His power to help you endure.

4.    Open your notebook to a fresh page and date it.  Then watch the video.  (there is a bit of music at the end of the video, so you can stop watching once that starts).

5.    As you watch, consider ‘thorns’ in your life and write down key points you learn about thorns to help you identify your thorn(s).

6.    Review your notes and circle the ‘thorn(s)’ you have identified.  If there is more than one, treat each one separately using the questions below.

NOTE:  If you have identified only one that is great.  In the future you may identify others.

7.    For each ‘thorn’ answer these questions:

a.     When did you notice the thorn?

b.    What are the negative effects of the thorn?

c.     What are the positive effects of the thorn?

d.    How often does it affect you?

e.     Is it something others could see?

f.     Has anyone ever pointed this thorn out to you?

g.    How has God used this thorn to strengthen your walk and service to Him?

8.    Pray and thank God that He loves you so much, He has selected the ‘perfect thorn’ for you.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

·      War Against Israel - Pray Israeli forces to locate and save all 133 remaining hostages.  It’s been over 250 days since 7 October, when this began.  Pray for the wisdom and safety of Israeli soldiers, for those who have lost loved ones and for those moving through enemy territory as they risk their lives to restore peace and purify the land of all terrorists.  Pray also for the Palestinian people – many are helpless captives of war.

·      Barbara – beloved widow (of my brother, Tim) thanks you for your prayers. As one of God’s faithful widows, pray God always protects her, especially at night and during the violent storms that have swirled around the house. Pray God guards the structure and integrity of the house and places willing people in her path to help as she faces a life without Tim.

·      Paul – pray for his physical and emotional health.  He still has no job or work after more than ten years.  Pray the Lord provides needed work so he can begin to heal and strengthen.

·      Denny & Marci – Marci is a lifetime friend, who also helps me with the WeakDay Devotion books.  She is feeling back to normal after recovering from internal shingles. Regarding her husband, they have decided they are able to do a less-invasive procedure to mend his heart.  Pray for his patience, the wisdom and skill of his health care providers and for Marci as she supports him through this time.

·      Nerida – that her living and career situation is resolved with grace, and she finds a new place to live and work that is more peaceful and supportive.

·      Elina – needs God’s wisdom and the courage of her convictions and resolve to live a life that is Christ-honouring for herself and her young son, Jimmy.

·      Demi and John – John was attacked and stabbed several times, including piercing his heart.  Although recovered physically, they are still pulling their lives back together.  Pray they might find the Lord in all the chaos left behind and that she finds work after a year of searching -- as she is now the ‘breadwinner’.

Deeds vs Fruit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_tlrCV6cz0

YouTube – Galatians 5:19-23

By – TheDoodleAge (2 min 19 sec)

“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident which are:  immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing,

" ...and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  Now those who belong to Chrit Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”   Galatians 5:19-23

It is natural to prefer that second paragraph to the first one.  It is a good one to memorise that lovely list of fruits.  Yet, it is the contrast between the two paragraphs that is so important.

Reading through the first paragraph will convict everyone.

When we realise how helpless we are against our very sin nature it can result in recognising our need for Jesus Christ’s gracious payment for those sins.  This is what breaks our hearts and results in the fruit of His new life!

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

[God speaking to Joshua, after Moses died] “’Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel.

“’Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given to you, just as I spoke to Moses.  From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great sea toward the setting of the son will be your territory.

“’No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life.  Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.

“’Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.  Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.

“’This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.  Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous!  Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’” Joshua 1:2-9
