God and Moses have been talking
for a while now atop of Mt Sinai and He has shared His Ten Commandments, yet God
is not finished:
“All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the
sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they
trembled and stood at a distance. Then
they said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God
speak to us, or we will die.’” Exodus 20:18-19
Moses begins to share more of God’s
ordinances and He gets to the part about care for the land:
“’You
shall sow your land for six years and gather in its yield, but on the seventh
year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the needy of your people may
eat; and whatever they leave the beast of the field may eat [consume].
You are to do the same with your
vineyard and your olive grove.’” Exodus 23:11
Just think of that! Can you IMAGINE what this world would be like
if every seventh year farmers let their land rest, if the needy could eat
whatever is left over and even the animals could eat their fill.
It would take so much faith in God
and His ability to provide. It would
take trust that He cares enough to provide.
Most of all, His provision would be a brilliant example to pre-believers
of His plan for His world.
Instead, greed and overworking of
the land, pulling down trees and destroying animals’ habitat and food sources
continues in sheer determined disobedience to God’s order. No wonder the earth is so ‘ill’ and
unproductive!
Take care with love, especially
His! Your servant and friend in Christ,
who still prays for you each morning.
