Deer Betrayal

“And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, ‘Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death.  Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.

“’Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth; and thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.’” Genesis 27:6-10 King James Version (in other versions the word for venison is translated ‘game’)

The first time I read those verses, I cried at how unfair it was to Esau.  It still hurts my heart when I read this.  How could the Bible tell such a tale of a scheming mother and weak son who stole the future of a son and hurt a dying father!

The longer we live, the more aware we become of injustices in the world and how sin lurks in our own hearts, thoughts, words and actions – even if everyone around us thinks we are OK.  Our heavenly Father knows.  He set the price for sin as eternal death!   Once we realise this, like Esau, we know we have no hope.

Yet, God established a perfect sacrifice for each one of us by sending His only beloved Son, Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life to pay the price for all our sins, past present and future.  It is up to us to choose to accept that gift and to follow him.

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
