Little Lost…

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, ‘Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slay the Passover lamb.  You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts;’” Exodus 12:21-22a

“All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.” Isaiah 53:6

[Jesus speaking] “’My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.  My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.  I and the Father are one.’” John 10:26-30

The first mention of sheep or lambs is in Genesis 4:2 where we read about the profession of the second-born son of Adam -- a keeper of the flocks, who was subsequently killed by his brother in a jealous rage.  Throughout the Bible, lambs provided a rich source of protein, their wool was used to make clothing and most importantly, they were sacrificed to God.

In reality, sheep are obstinate animals, determined and forgetful.  They are difficult to lead or herd and they have a tendency to wander off after something and get lost frequently.  As we read through the Bible, we can see the same theme repeated as a reminder to us of how much we need a Shepherd-Saviour.

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
