Stevie Wonder
“As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?’
“Jesus answered, ‘It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.’
“When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, and said to him, ‘Go wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.” John 9:1-7
While working with an entertainment management company in Atlanta, my boss gave me an unusual assignment: to care for one of Stevie Wonder’s most devoted fans whose name was John. John had gone to the same blind school as Stevie and they remained good friends.
Stevie’s team arranged to get John to the venue, where he would be entrusted to me to help him enjoy his first live concert. The venue was packed and we had seats in a special area to the right of the stage on the ground floor. I had also ‘prayed my face off’ that God would show me how to handle this challenge.
John had the same posture of many blind people – always looking up. He also had a great big German shepherd guide dog that looked fierce. Moving through the crowd was a bit difficult without causing a stir. We were escorted to our amazing VIP seats and settled in. The lights and music began and I never imagined how difficult a task I had, but John was kind to me.
I had met John before but was still nervous especially as we were escorted after the concert to meet Stevie. I watched as these two men shared something I would never understand.
Have you ever wondered at this passage in the book of John? I have and it has meant far more to me since this event helping a man born blind experience this concert. If you know me, you know I’m rarely lost for words, but this…this was different. I realised that the natural ‘visual’ understanding I had, made me ‘blind’ to this man’s world. How do you describe what you are seeing to someone who has never seen!?
But it is much like those in our world who have no understanding and relationship with Jesus Christ as their Saviour. They too were ‘born blind’ and this makes it difficult for us to ‘describe’ the wonders of His gift of gracious redemption because we see things in a new Light.
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” John 8:12

NOTES: I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
The Five Solas: Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
