Contempt With Pride
“To You I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He is gracious to us.
“Be gracious to us, O Lord, be gracious to us, for we are greatly filled with contempt. Our soul is greatly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.” Psalm 123
The psalmist longed for God to send His mercy. He compared his wait to a servant looking for hope in the eyes of his Master in a world that had forgotten Him. The servant knew that the evil and proud would not care or help him because they were filled with only contempt for God.
It sometimes seems the world has drifted too far from God. It is increasingly difficult to hold our ground when so many now take pride in their contempt for our Saviour. Yet, we know that our God, the Maker and Sustainer of all things, is still-- and always has been -- working all things together for our good and His glory.
