Love Is Not Enough

=============================================

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

“And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have not received reconciliation.  Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned – for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

“But the free gift is not like the transgression.  For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.  The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.

“For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:6-17

If you are not familiar with the book of Romans, or if you are labouring to explaining God’s gracious gift of salvation to someone you love, this passage can be very helpful.

Each of us chooses to do what we think is right in our own eyes, even when it means disobeying God.  God in His love -- as early as Genesis 3 -- established the penalty for sin – eternal death.

And yet, from this same Genesis 3 passage, He established a way every individual could ensure eternal life.  However, this way meant God had to allow His only Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sins and mine by dying a horrible death.  It is up to each one of us to reach out and admit we are helpless against our sinful nature and ask Jesus to save us from ourselves.  There is no other way.

 NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
