He Wept

“Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.  Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

“Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, ‘Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.’

“When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, and said, ‘Where have you laid him?’  They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see.’

“Jesus wept.” John 11:28-35

If you have lost a loved one -- a parent, a sibling, a spouse, a great and precious friend, grief always surprises you.  Each time there is a loss in your life, you imagine you will be stronger or at least you will manage your grief better.

And yet the pain of loss sneaks up on you like a prowling tiger, striking holes in your heart for a season.  Many advise you to be tough, to not cry, to get on with life…but Jesus is your example.

“Jesus wept.”

The shortest verse in the Bible expresses His almighty tenderness and love for you.  Jesus obeyed His Father and paid the price for your sin.  Only by His sacrifice can you have the promise of eternal life and comfort through your grief.

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
