Sounds of Thanks
“’Thou hast also delivered me from the contentions of my people; Thou hast kept me as head of the nations’ a people whom I have not known serve me. Foreigners pretend obedience to me; as soon as they hear, they obey me; foreigners lose heart, and come trembling out of their fortresses.
“And they brought in the ark of God and placed it inside the tent which David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord. And he distributed to everyone of Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread and a portion of meat and a raisin cake.
“And he appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, even to celebrate and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel: Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with musical instruments, harps, lyres;
“…also Asaph played loud-sounding cymbals, and Benaniah and Jahaziel the priests blew trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. Then on that day David first assigned Asaph and his relatives to give thanks to the Lord. 1 Chronicles 16:1-7
Thanksgiving was my favourite holiday. Not just for the turkey and pumpkin pie, but because my family insisted on sharing it with strangers. My Mom would cook for days in preparation. My Dad would rearrange our living room to accommodate a big, folding aluminum table.
My brother would find the extra chairs around the house and help Dad as needed. I would set the table with some special place cards and create some kind of centrepiece.
Mom would pick the music. Often it was Tennessee Earnie Ford, Mahaliah Jackson or the Mormon Tabernacle Chior. Once everyone was seated, the music was turned off until after each of us took our turn to thank God for all the many blessing we received during the year. Then the music would resume and inspire us throughout the abundance God had provided.
Many stories in the Bible remind us of the critical importance to be thankful.
