Wheat for Minchah

[King Darius after finding Cyrus’ Decree] “’Moreover, I issue a decree concerning what you are to do for these elders of Judah in the rebuilding of this house of God:  the full cost is to be paid to these people from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces beyond the River, and that without delay.

“’Whatever is needed, both young bulls, rams, and lambs for a burnt offering to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and anointing oil, as the priests in Jerusalem request, it is to be given to them daily without fail, that they may offer acceptable sacrifices to the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and his sons.’” Ezra 6:8-10

[Moses speaking] “’For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.’” Deuteronomy 8:7-9

Wheat is one of the most significant grains mentioned in the Bible.  It was a vital crop essential for daily survival and required a lot of physical work to plant, harvest and prepare to be of use as a food.  It symbolised economic stability and was often used as a measure of wealth and power in trade.

It was also a crucial part of the sacrificial system where grain offering, called ‘minchah’ symbolised thanksgiving and dedication to God as a reflection of how we are dependent on our Father God for our daily survival.  It was typically prepared by mixing fine wheat with olive oil and frankincense.

Wheat also serves as a powerful symbol of spiritual truths throughout the Bible.  Jesus used it often to remind us of our dependence on God’s provision to sustain us, the purity and dedication required in worship and the transformative power of sacrifice in the believer’s journey of faith.

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
