Thanks

“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh at that place.  And the Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

“And the man said, [At last!] this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’  For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 1:22-24

I give thanks for everyone who shared their choice for the next series.  God uses every one of you to help me provide better devotions for you and for that I’m grateful.  The new series will be thanks and examples of thanks in Scripture.

The word itself is a bit fascinating and also a bit different in the two Testaments.

In the Old Testament the words are very emotional and offer a rich, action-oriented picture of humble gratitude.  Giving thanks in the Old Testament is not just a feeling, it is declarative, physical and often sacrificial.  It involves confessing God's greatness, lifting up of hands and often offering a tangible "thank offering" or creating a symbol that stands for thanks.

The first expression of thanks were also the first words spoken by anyone on earth!  After Adam completed his first job assignment of naming the animals, gives thanks to God, for at last, creating a companion suitable for him.

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
