Thank You for Blindness!

“We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.  Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.  If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.’  They answered him, ‘You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?’  So they put him out.

“Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’  He answered, ‘Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?’  Jesus said to him, ‘You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you.’

“And he said, ‘Lord, I believe.’  And he worshipped Him.  And Jesus said, ‘For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.’   John 9:29-39

If you are someone who can see with your own eyes, it is almost impossible to imagine being sightless from birth!  I once had the privilege of guiding a man born blind to and through a Stevie Wonder concert.  Even though we had front-row seats and special passes to take us backstage to meet Stevie, it could not have made up for seeing the performance.

Although I struggled trying to describe what everything looked like – he had no reference point for colours or shapes or a person’s face or height, etc.  It was a profound experience for me that I will never take for granted.

But this story is a brilliant illustration of our blind-to-sin lives.  Jesus healed this blind man and gave him a new life of sight.  Jesus offers each of us healing for the pitch-dark blindness we have to the sin in our lives.  When we accept His truth and His loving grace and free gift of eternal life, nothing will ever look the same again!

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
