Thanks for Shephards
“In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you; you will find a baby wrapped with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

My Daddy was born in 1900. He was immensely intelligent, inquisitive and self-taught. He left formal school in the eighth grade to sneak into World War I. When I ‘met’ him, he had become a skilled craftsman in trades such as carpentry, heating/ air conditioning, plumbing and electricity – he could fix most anything actually! Yet, he was a remarkably humble man…no one would have seen him as important in this world (unless you were a close friend or family).
He was a bit like these rough and tough shepherds who wrestled with the elements and the sheep they looked after day after day. Isn’t it surprising how ordinary humble, hardworking individuals are an unexpected focus of the Bible?
Oh, yes, there were Kings and prophets and high Pharisees and Sadducees, but it was to the common, hardworking fishermen and craftsmen that the angels came to first to announce the great event of our Saviours birth. To me that is comforting and encouraging.
