Nefarious
“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. And the LORD said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land...’
“Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.” (Genesis 6:5-7, 11-12)
I had a word rolling around in my head all day yesterday, ‘nefarious’. When I did some research, I discovered it comes from the Latin word ‘nefarius’ and means impious or against divine law (ne = not and fas = divine right/ law).
Although, the word does not occur in the Bible, the concepts of wicked, villainous, or criminal do. Calling something nefarious labels it as profoundly and ‘wrong at a fundamental, often spiritual or ethical level’. It is an act against God’s will and divine order. It is one of the stronger words in English for condemning evil intent.
But as strong as the word is, it simply describes sin…an act against God’s will and divine order. Then as I searched for passages to share this morning and remembered that God has a list of nefarious traits:
“There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue and hands that shed innocent blood. A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.” Proverbs 6:16-19
Just think about that list! Thank God, His compassion never fails and His forgiveness -- purchased with the blood of His Son – is available to anyone who will seek Him, to be freed from their nefarious life.

NOTES: I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
The Five Solas: Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
