Rock and Sand
“’Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock.
“’And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.’
“The result was that when Jesus had finished these words, the multitudes were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.” Matthew 7:24-29
Think of a life as if it was a house being built. Most people do not deliberately build their lives on a false or inferior foundation. They simply don’t think about it. They live their lives purposelessly from one temptation to another.
Sadly, they are headed for eternal destruction. It’s usually not about being stubborn, but out of thoughtlessness and being too busy to consider their true purpose.
And that’s where Matthew 28:18-20 comes in. Once we discover the ‘Rock’ to build our lives on we are entrusted with the privilege of pointing the way to the ‘Rock’ – Jesus Christ.
Therefore, we must always be prepared to help others think about what their ultimate future is (I Peter 3:15). Let us be ready and bold enough to point others to the Truth of the Gospel message!
