Ezer Kenegdo
“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’ Out of the ground the Lord formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
“The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. So God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.
“The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:18-24
Mysteries and confusion about the precious love of our Father-God for His children start from almost page one of His wonderful Word. This passage is one of the most argued over because of the word ‘Ezer Kenegdo ’, translated as ‘helper suitable for him or sometimes as help-meet’.
Women can easily resent it and stand against it. Some women use it as an excuse not to make decisions or take responsibility. Men may misinterpret it and use it to dominate and brutalise women.
The way to understand the profound meaning of that phrase is to know that many times this is the very phrase that God uses to describe His relationship with His children. Just think about that!!
From Hebrew ‘ezer’ literally means to connect to. God is the ‘Helper’ of Israel. The word does not imply negative, lesser or secondary but helper, aid or strength (strengthening someone in a way they cannot do it for themselves. It is a word God uses to describe Himself in relation to Israel. God helped, aided and strengthened Israel in ways she was unable to do for herself and He continues to help you and me every moment still!
Here are some passages you can read through to substantiate this and be in awe of God’s great love and care for you right now!
· Deuteronomy 33:26-29
· Psalm 121:1-8 (one you know well!)
· Psalm 20:1-9
· Psalm 33:16-22
· Psalm 70:1-5
· Psalm 115:9-11,

NOTES: I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
The Five Solas: Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
