“But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, ‘We have seen the Lord!’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.’
“After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then He said to Thomas, ‘Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.
“Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen Me, have your believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.’” John 20:24-29
If you read closely you will notice that Thomas recognised Jesus and did not worry about placing his hands in His side or touching the nail prints in His hands. He simply recognised the Lord and worshipped Him.
There is such worldly interest in finding the Ark, unravelling the mystery of the Turin Shroud, finding a piece of the cross, etc. It is in man’s nature to doubt.
Each of us have our unique path to believe in the Truth of Jesus (Psalm 139), but it is clear from Genesis 3, that facts and truth do not rely on how we feel about these promises.
The promise of our eternal life is ours regardless of whether we feel worthy or not or feel ‘different’ or not or find the Ark or touch the shroud of Turin or not. All that is needed is…
· To recognise and admit we are sinful in thought, word and deed
· and unable to save ourselves through any means of our own and
· reach out to the only One who is qualified to save us (Jesus)
· and admit our sin and ask for His forgiveness
· He promises we are sealed as His for eternity.
As with doubting Thomas, once we realise this, and recognise the Saviour, we don’t need any other proof of His promise to us!
