How to KNOW

“The Man on the middle cross said I could come…”

“For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.  For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I m doing the very thing I hate.  But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.

“So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.  For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.  For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.

“But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.  I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good.

“For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.  Wretched man that I am!

“Who will set me free from the body of this death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:14-25

The first time you read through Romans and stumble onto this section, you are likely to be as surprised as I was!  Paul, this amazing man who wrote most of the letters in the New Testament, struggled with his daily walk!?  If anyone would have assurance, it would be him…and yet he did not.

Reading though the passage above, however, there is a little hint into WHY we often fear we are not good enough or have fallen into our own way of living and therefore…perhaps, we’ve done too much sinning to be redeemable.

If I was the evil one, I would remind you of your failures as often as possible.  Why?  So, your walk and your service were compromised.  The world and the evil in it want to halt your walk with Christ – to stop you from sharing with others – to be ashamed that you keep stumbling – to focus on self and not the Truth!

What a remarkable plan!  Knowing this, we have a choice to believe the voice whispering in our ear:  ‘Indeed, has God not said’…you should be perfect, you should serve, you should not do this or that, you should do this or that…’?

Or should we listen to the voice that says, “’All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

“’Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and My burden is light.’” Matthew 11:27-30 ‘Follow Me.’

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
