Holiness – Step 3 – Avoidance

“Like a city that is broken into and without walls is a man who has no control over his spirit.”  Proverbs 25:28

“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable.  All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.” I Corinthians 6:12

“In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and the sound doctrine which you have been following.  But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women.  On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
I Timothy 4:6-8

“Blessed is a man who preserves under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.  Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.  But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.  Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”
James 1:12-15

“’Submit therefore to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” James 4:7-10

There is a price we must pay to grasp godliness.  It is never on sale and it never comes cheaply or easily.  We must walk in a way to avoid pitfalls and snares.  To do this the Bible uses deliberate terms to encourage us, such as persevere, make diligent effort, press on, flee, avoid and most of all, practice.

Yes, I suppose it is a peculiar thought to imagine practicing godliness, but then that is how we start each day when we take time to consider our lives in service to our Saviour!

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
