Holiness – Step 1 - Prayer

“One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to meditate in His temple.  For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; in the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock.  And now my heard will be lifted up above my enemies around me; and I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing, yet, I will sing praises to the Lord.”  Psalm 27:4-6

“Teach me Thy way, O Lord; I will walk in Thy truth; unite my heart to fear Thy name.  I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and will glorify Thy name forever.  For Thy lovingkindness toward me is great, and Thou hast delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.” Psalm 86:11-13

“For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God.”  Ephesians 3:14-19

The second step to growing in godliness (I’m saving the key step till last) is prayer.  When you think about it prayer can become easy to skip or skip over because it is ‘too easy’ and we can be lulled into a lazy or missing prayer life.

Yet, if we are committed to the practice of godliness (our lifelong mission), our prayer life will reflect the brightness of His glory so we may attract others to His message (our purpose).

To practice godliness, we will regularly:

·       ask God to increase our fear of Him (Proverbs 9:10)

·       deepen our understanding of His love for us

·       increase our desire for fellowship with Him.

Prayer is our way to approach the throne of grace to obtain mercy and express our vital dependence on God.  Let us be challenged today to pray He will cause us to grow in our devotion to Him.

NOTES:  I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

The Five Solas:  Individuals are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone to the glory of God alone!
